Courageous Conversations: Is it Legal, Ethical and Smart?
October 25, 2021
4:00pm – 5:00pm
Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s ethical, just because it’s ethical doesn’t mean it’s smart.
Ethics is a constant, fundamental concern at the very heart of philanthropy, not because people in this sector are routinely unethical, but rather because philanthropy carries a special ethical and moral status in our society. (Learnphilanthropy.org) Donors and regulators set a very high bar for NPOs – and it keeps getting higher!
In your daily work, how do you anticipate in advance and make a plan for the ethical dilemmas you know you will face, so you have an approved action plan? How do you see an unplanned ethical dilemma coming? How do you handle it? How does agency administration and the board want to handle it? What about all of the ‘gray areas’? Join AFP Las Vegas and philanthropy ethics expert Robbe Healey, MBA, NHA, ACFRE, to learn how to navigate the ethical waters that happen in our profession. Be prepared to be amazed! Bring your questions and experiences, now is the time to get the answers!
OBJECTIVES: Participants will explore:
- Brief review of the seven typical areas of work that give rise to ethical dilemmas.
- Approaches and practices to protect your mission, brand, organization, yourself, and your staff.
- If you don’t have a plan to decide whether or not you need to return money, strip a naming from a building or named fund, how do you start the internal dialogue before confronted with a tainted donor whose actions can harm your brand?
- Can your organization be ethical without being diverse or inclusive?
